Thought Toyotas were supposed to be reliable?

Got a check engine light on my Sienna after a 10-hour road trip through the mountains. Probably all that uphill driving, pushing it hard at 120 km/h… just a MAF sensor issue, nothing major. But hey, that’s what happens when you push your car a little too much!

It’s funny, I know people who get a Toyota, run it to 300k miles, and then get mad when something finally breaks. It’s like… dude, it’s not invincible.

Right? It’s usually just a check engine light, nothing major. Could be a thermostat, could be MAF… no need to panic.

@Lily
My 05 Matrix didn’t throw a code until 540k km… and it was just because the gas cap wasn’t tight.

@Lily
Yep, just a MAF sensor this time. I was joking about the reliability thing in my post.

Assuming people actually read the whole post? That’s bold of you, my friend.

So what do you do to fix a MAF sensor?

You can clean it with MAF cleaner spray or just replace it. I decided to replace it, didn’t want to deal with it down the line. Car’s in the shop as we speak.

@GARAGETOY
I might need to keep an eye on mine. How much did a new one cost you? Got a part number?

It cost me $300 CAD. Not sure of the part number since I’m on vacation and had to use a shop my family recommended.

@GARAGETOY
The part number is usually right on the sensor itself. Make sure to stick with Denso for Toyotas.

Can’t see the part number, but it’s got the Denso logo on it so I’m all good!

@GARAGETOY
MAF sensors are super easy to swap out. Just a couple of bolts, a hose clamp, and a clip. Easy job.

Yeah, I’d have done it myself if I wasn’t a thousand kilometers away from home without any tools. Probably would’ve tried cleaning it first, but better safe than sorry on a long drive back.

@GARAGETOY
Makes sense! I’m too cheap so I’d just clean it and see how it goes. If not, I’d deal with the check engine light until I got home.

Don’t pay a shop for this! It’s a quick job you can do yourself. Most of the time, you can just clean it instead of replacing it.

Change it yourself, it’s super easy. Took me just a couple of minutes, and I’ve never worked on cars before.

@Milo
I hate when the clip for the MAF gets brittle and snaps when you’re taking it out. It’s annoying!

I got the joke. I was just replying to the other comment, haha.
