Thoughts on the 4Runner TRD Pro… is it worth it?

Yuppie bait.

Is it a good family SUV or just yuppie bait?

The 4Runner is a great vehicle.

The TRD Pro is an extra $15,000 for a badge and some shocks.

@Ellery
So, the off-road capability would be better with the Pro?

Most owners never use the CRAWL system. The rear locker is nice, but Toyota’s ATRAC system works well at preventing wheel slip. If you want the current generation, inventory is low since production stopped. The 2025 models will be available in spring.

Do you want a modern vehicle designed for the future, or one with a drivetrain that’s over 20 years old?

@Ellery
Yeah, the older models are reliable. The new Tacoma and Tundra have had issues, so it might be best to wait and see how the new models hold up.

I own a 4Runner.

Just kidding, but I love my Pro. I’ve had four 5th-gen 4Runners, and my 2022 Pro is by far my favorite.

@Cass
Mine’s an ‘86 with a SAS and 3.4 swap. It’s a blast.

The better family SUV would be the SR5 Premium or the Limited.

I sometimes wish I had bought a 4Runner instead of my Rav4, something more capable and bigger, but it’s too late now, maybe later. I do enjoy better gas mileage

The TRD Pro 4Runner can’t tow much. Maybe a jet ski. It’s rated for almost 5,000 pounds, but I wouldn’t tow anywhere near that.

It’s an awesome vehicle, but towing isn’t its strong point.

The suspension is soft, so it will squat a lot and could easily exceed the payload capacity.

@fortuna
You could upgrade the suspension. It’s a beast of a car, and a suspension upgrade would make it even better.

V6 engine?

I have a TRD Pro. The main appeal is how rare and valuable they are. The resale value is incredible, on top of the already great resale value of the 4Runner. The Pro does have a few upgrades over lower trims, but no matter what you do to the lower trims, they will never be a Pro.

That said, all 4Runners are great vehicles, and I highly recommend one.

Pros

Resale value
Reliability
Off-road capability

Cons

Price
Gas mileage
Some people don’t like the ride quality
