I’m not the biggest Toyota fan, but one model I’ve been keeping a close eye on is the rumored new MR2. It’s based on that yellow FT-SE concept, if I’m not mistaken.
There have been so many conflicting rumors. Some say it’ll be an affordable lightweight sports car with around 120 hp and a price between $20K–$25K. Others say it’ll be a high-performance car with a turbocharged 400 hp engine, priced closer to $70K.
Do you think there’s a chance it could be both? Maybe Toyota offers a base model at an entry-level price, similar to the GR86, and then a higher-performance version at the top end to boost profits? I know that’s a wild theory, but I wanted to throw it out there and see what others think.
I don’t see Toyota offering it for anything less than $50K. The GR Corolla already starts around $40K, and rumors suggest the MR2 could be even more powerful.
If Toyota wanted to replace the GR86, the Celica would make more sense. They’ve already confirmed that name is coming back.
A $25K sports car from Toyota in the U.S.? Not happening. The closest thing would be the GR Yaris, but even that isn’t available here.
If it’s a 90s JDM sports car that isn’t currently in production, assume all rumors are nonsense until you can actually walk into a dealership and buy one. Most of these rumors are just speculation with no real basis.
