Tire pressure light showing at 50 psi?

I’ve got a 2021 Tundra. It recommends 35 psi, but I carry a decent amount of weight, so I bumped the tires up to 50 psi (well within their max rating). But now the TPMS light keeps popping up when the tires heat up. It’s the same warning light I’ve seen for low pressure, so I’m guessing it’s reacting to high pressure now? Is that even a thing? Can I adjust the pressure threshold anywhere? Appreciate any help.

Yep, you’re likely setting off the TPMS because 50 psi is too much for the system’s default range, even if the tire itself is rated for it. https://club.autodoc.co.uk/magazin/tyre-pressure-how-high-should-it-be-and-what-does-it-affect

@Vesper
Thanks

Check out pages 482-484 in the owner’s manual. There’s a section on resetting the system after changing tires or pressure. You can do it all through the dash menu. FWIW, I didn’t see anything in there about warnings for high pressure though—just low.

@Noah
OK Thanks! Will check my manual for this setting. Probably lower to 45 psi just to get annoying light off.

Funny enough, I’ve bumped pressure to 60 psi in other trucks (also Toyotas) when towing and never saw a TPMS warning. Those all had a button to set whatever the current psi was as ‘normal’. I haven’t tried going over 40 yet in the Tundra though. Definitely something to dig into.

@Noah
Thanks

Keep in mind, if you set your tires to 50 psi cold, they could climb to 55-60 psi once they’re hot. Check the TPMS readout when the truck’s fully loaded and the tires are warm. If 50 is your goal while driving, you might want to set that pressure when the tires are warm. Also, you can reset the TPMS using the dash menu so it recognizes the new pressure as normal.

@Daryn
Thanks. Will try to find this in my settings. Think I’ll lower to 45 psi just to get annoying light off.

You’ve got too much air in the tires. Even if you’re hauling a load, 50 psi is overkill if the manual says 35. Stick with the manufacturer’s specs—those numbers account for max payloads and towing.

Not quite—higher psi does increase the load capacity up to the tire’s rated limit. It’s not unsafe if done right.

@Daryn
Fair point. Just watch out, though. TPMS can go off if you exceed the sensor’s expected range, and long-term overinflation might mess with the sensor or valve stem.
