Saw TWO matching white Toyota Hilux trucks in NC today! Turbo diesel with Mexican plates… are they finally coming to the US?
Cool sighting, but no, they’re just visiting from Mexico. People post about this kind of thing pretty often here. I remember someone sharing a GR Yaris not too long ago, and I’ve definitely seen a few Hilux trucks pop up too.
I’ve even seen a newer Renault crossover with Mexican plates, but Renault isn’t coming here anytime soon.
@Zeke
I saw two Dodge Ram 1500s in one day. Thought one had Texas plates, but at least one was definitely from Mexico.
Nope… inline-4 diesel models are sold in Mexico.

That 4-cylinder turbo diesel is solid and has plenty of power for everyday driving in Australia.

You mean the D4D? The one known for cracked pistons?
Are we finally getting the Toyota Hilux in the US?
Nope, blame the chicken tax and the new tariffs from Trump.

The chicken tax has been around for decades, not Trump’s fault, but it should be scrapped. The tariffs Trump is talking about now are just extra taxes, not a ban. It would only make them more expensive. The chicken tax, though, is what really keeps them out. I really want to import some newer cars from Japan. Just brought in a 1997 Starlet. But both parties have kept the chicken tax in place for years, so it’s not just on Trump.
@Jalen
I wasn’t blaming the chicken tax on Trump.

Gotcha, just sounded that way. I emailed my senator last month asking for the chicken tax to be swapped for a tariff. A 25% tariff is still way cheaper than what dealerships are charging here.
@Jalen
Yeah, I totally agree. Even a lower tariff would be better than the current setup.

The chicken tax has always been a tariff, not a full-on ban.
@Jalen
The chicken tax is literally a tariff, not a ban.
Damn, I want one!
Can I just buy one in Mexico, register it to a PO box there, and call it a day?

Looked into it… not that simple. Canada is a different story, though.
Not an option to buy one here. I saw one from Canada once, though.

Yeah, Canada allows imports a lot sooner than the US. You just have to wait 15 years instead of 25.
@Dorian
I always thought the US exported Tacomas to Canada instead of Hilux trucks. The one I saw had a Canadian plate. Do they have more relaxed import laws up there?

Yeah, Canada is more flexible, but a Hilux still has to be 15+ years old before you can import it.
