I don’t understand why there’s a point to having a PHEV with a range of over 100 miles. The main problem with PHEVs is that they need maintenance for two drive systems, which increases the risk of mechanical issues.
PHEVs are supposed to have a smaller, more affordable battery, but it doesn’t seem like that’s the case here. It looks like Toyota is really trying to support and protect their traditional internal combustion engine partners.
124 seems like a lot. It would probably need a 40-45kwh battery on top of an engine, which would make it as heavy as or even heavier than a Model 3.
A reasonable electric vehicle range should be around 50 miles, assuming you can charge it when you reach your destination. This range would more than adequately cover most people’s daily commutes in America.
