Toyota just dropped the Crown Estate in Japan… what do we think

Toyota just launched the Crown Estate in Japan, making it the last of the four Crown models. It’s got that mix of SUV and wagon vibes with hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. The PHEV gets about 89 km of EV range, and the luggage space can go up to 1,470 liters when the seats are down.

Looks like Toyota is leaning into versatility with this one. Anyone here a fan of the new Crown lineup, or is this just another niche model?

Wait… Crown Estate? Is this a new version of the old Toyota Crown, or is it a different model?

Yeah, it’s part of the new Crown lineup. Toyota split the Crown into four models: Crossover, Sport, Sedan, and now Estate. This one’s like an SUV-wagon hybrid.

@Oren
So it’s not just a long version of the sedan?

Nope, different body style and features. More space, different suspension tuning, and a focus on an ‘active lifestyle’ with extra storage and some camping-friendly features.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid… no EV version?

No full EV for now. Just HEV and PHEV. The PHEV does get 89 km of electric range though, so it might be enough for city driving without gas.

@Oren
That’s not bad, but Toyota is really dragging its feet on BEVs. Seems like they’re still playing it safe with hybrids.

So this is more of a luxury wagon than an SUV?

Yeah, kinda. Toyota calls it an SUV-wagon mix. It has a big cargo area, AWD options, and some outdoor-friendly features like a pull-out deck chair and table.

@Oren
A built-in deck chair? Lol, are they marketing this as a camping car now?

Kinda seems like it. Toyota’s definitely pushing that ‘active lifestyle’ angle. The rear seats fold flat to create a 2-meter-long cargo space too.

Does this thing have good tech, or is it the usual Toyota interior?

It’s got a horizontal layout for the driver’s display to minimize distractions. Also has a 14-inch screen, wireless chargers, rear seat climate controls, and ambient lighting.

How big is the cargo space? Looks like a long car but is it practical?

It’s 570 liters with seats up, 1,470 liters when folded. Plus, it has a new mechanism that makes the cargo space fully flat when the seats are down.

Pricing? Any idea what this will cost?

In Japan, the HEV model starts at 6,350,000 yen (~$42k USD) and the PHEV starts at 8,100,000 yen (~$54k USD).

Oof, that’s a lot. Toyota pushing premium pricing these days.

I saw something about Toyota’s KINTO subscription… does this car come with that?
