Just found out that newer Toyotas are tracking your data and sharing it with insurance companies, which might affect your rates. It’s similar to what GM has been doing. If you don’t like it, you can opt out of these services.

Does this tracking only happen if you pay for their service?

I think it tracks as long as the app is installed, but I’m not sure.

Nope, it’s tracked through the car’s system. To fully stop it, you’d need to modify the modem.

Is it possible to modify it like that?

Yes, there’s info online. Usually involves desoldering parts of the modem.

Good to know! My car’s a 2010, so I’m probably good.

Tried opting out and got an error. Said it was only available to residents in specific states.

Try calling Toyota. They’ve got options to help with privacy choices, but they may need to verify your info first.

How do you opt out?

Use the Toyota app. Go to profile, account, data privacy, and then opt out of Insure Connect and Drive Pulse.

My dealer explained what I could opt in or out of when I bought my car.

Thanks for sharing… just checked my Toyota app, and I supposedly accepted data sharing when I bought my used Avalon. Opted out now, but still wild that it was tracking.

All of this just shows how they’re trapping people into paying more for everything. Don’t accept this stuff.

What about second owners? Does Toyota still track because of the first owner? How do we turn it off?

Turn it off in the app. Go to Profile > Account > Data Privacy Portal > Insure Connect > Decline.

What if you never used the app?

Defaults to sharing info, so I’d suggest downloading the app. It’s useful for monitoring updates and issues anyway.

This sounds right. I remember opting out when I got my car.

Here’s an article about car data privacy issues: Mozilla Privacy Report and Toyota-specific info.

How do we opt out, and what happens if we do?

What years does this affect?
