Update on my 2025 Camry LE… engine still feels weird but getting great mpg?

Hey everyone, I posted back in May about my new 2025 Camry LE and how the engine feels like it’s working too hard at low speeds. A lot of people commented saying they noticed the same thing.

Even though it’s still happening, I’m thinking it might be normal since my gas mileage is still really good. On a full tank, just highway driving, I get around 470 miles. And in my city, which is super hilly, I’m getting about 350 miles per tank.

Overall, I’m averaging between 46 to 50 mpg on a full tank, so I’m not too worried about the engine anymore. You can check my original post on my profile!

I’ve noticed the same, especially in colder places, so I thought maybe it’s some kind of heating feature. But yeah, getting 56 mpg on a trip from LA to SF was amazing. I don’t see why anyone would get a Model 3 with this kind of efficiency.

@Harlyn
I took a road trip to LA, about 300 miles going 75-80 mph, and ended up with 49 mpg. Not bad at all!

I tried a trip at 65-70 mph just to see what would happen, then drove back at 75-80 and got mpg numbers similar to yours.

@Harlyn
I don’t know how you manage to drive that slow :joy:

Haha, I just followed a big rig going 65 mph for a long time. Took a break in Harris.

Toyota’s D4S uses both direct and port injection at different loads. Direct injection is used more at high loads.

So is it normal to hear a louder noise at low speeds sometimes? It seems to happen briefly.

@GregoryMesh3
Never noticed it in my 2021 Highlander Hybrid or when I rented a 2025 Camry LE for work.

It’s subtle. It’s a bit louder at low speeds, then it fades away quickly. My mpg is 58, so I’m not too concerned!

@GregoryMesh3
Could it be a ticking noise? That might be the high-pressure fuel pump for the direct injection. That’s normal.

Doesn’t really sound like ticking. It’s more like the engine is working harder for a moment.

What does that even mean? Speak English, please!

Have you tried using sport mode or paddle shifters to increase the RPM a little? It might help the engine, but it will affect gas mileage. Also, maybe try a fuel additive. I’ve had low RPM issues with bad fuel before.

Mine does it at lower speeds when the battery is low.

Yeah, mine too. Maybe it’s to charge the battery?

I was wondering about this too. These engines can switch between port and direct injection. My guess is that at low speeds, the engine might sound different because the direct injection pump is pretty loud, not because RPMs are higher. I don’t look at the RPMs much on my 2025 SE, so this is just a thought. I’m no mechanic!

@CarEnthusiast
That actually makes sense because when my engine gets loud at low speeds, the RPMs aren’t high. So you might be onto something!

My Camry’s engine is noisy at low speeds, but the revs never go above 2500, usually below 2000. I don’t think these engines rev very high.

@Lake
Yeah, I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. Probably just recharging the battery.
