Voltage Abnormality Steering Power Low - What Could It Be?

2023 Tundra, 1794 Edition, 8600ish miles

Has anyone else gotten this message before? I’ve posted in other places with no luck and can’t find a solution online. I’ve had it pop up four times now. The dealership doesn’t know what’s going on and couldn’t find anything. Anyone have ideas?

That message usually comes up when your battery is running low. Have you had any recent work done on your truck? It might be worth checking the negative battery cable to make sure it’s secure. If that looks good, you might be dealing with a dying battery. Get it tested to be safe.

People sometimes see this if they idle for too long with a lot of accessories running, or leave it in accessory mode, which drains the battery fast. Try Googling the exact error, there are some discussions about this on Toyota forums.

@Tully
Thanks for your input! The only work I’ve had done is my regular one-year maintenance. I had two of these messages before that, and two after. The dealership checked the battery and said it’s fine. The error didn’t happen during idle, though—just randomly while driving with different levels of accessory use.

I haven’t dealt with this message myself, but have you tried getting the codes scanned? Even if the dealership doesn’t know what the message means, they should be able to pull codes from the vehicle to figure it out. Hope you get it sorted!

@Owen
Yep, I had them scan it. They didn’t find anything, and of course, they couldn’t get the message to pop up while they were driving it. They also tested the battery and said it’s fine. Thanks for the suggestion!

Love seeing folks say thank you! It’s nice to see some gratitude here!

Absolutely! I really appreciate anyone taking the time to help out with my first-world problem. Time is valuable!

Go get your 12V battery tested at an auto parts store, most of them will do it for free. If you need a new battery, Walmart usually has the cheapest options.

Good call. I’ll see if I can get a second opinion on the battery.

If the battery and alternator check out, it could be a wiring issue or even a fault in the electric power steering system. You should really have your dealer run a full diagnostic scan and document this issue so it’s on record, especially while it’s still under warranty.

Did this happen when it was cooler outside? Sometimes poor connections in the power supply to the steering rack can cause this, and in some cases, it means needing a new steering rack, which can take a while to replace.

@Tallis
They did scan it and didn’t find anything. They just told me to take a picture next time it happens. I haven’t noticed a pattern related to temperature or weather. The first time, it was really hot, and then yesterday, it was cooler.

Interestingly, the first error message was slightly different. It mentioned a voltage abnormality but said it was disabling lane assist. After that, I turned lane assist off to see if it was the issue. Since then, I’ve gotten three more messages, but they all mention steering power. Thanks for the detailed response!
