Want a new Sequoia but father-in-law is against it due to recalls, how do I convince him?

I could buy a new Sequoia myself, but my father-in-law was willing to help fund it until he read about recalls and issues with the engine. Now he’s against it. While I could just move forward on my own, his extra support would help.

How do I get him back on board with the Sequoia?

Simple solution—get a previous generation instead.

I considered the new Gen 3 but ended up with a Gen 2 instead. Here’s why:

  • Independent rear suspension makes the 3rd row actually usable, unlike the Gen 3.
  • 5.7L V8 is proven and will last forever if maintained.
  • Tows 7,500 lbs, which is plenty for most people. The Gen 3 tows more, but I wouldn’t trust a twin-turbo V6 under that stress long term.
  • Second-row captain’s chairs in the Gen 3 feel cramped, especially with a moonroof.
  • Gen 2 seats slide and adjust, Gen 3 ones don’t.

I flew to Ohio to buy a clean used Gen 2 instead of going for a brand-new Gen 3. No regrets.

@Finnley
Agree with all of this.

@Finnley
Thanks for the info.

Why try to convince him? The new Sequoia isn’t great. Toyota really dropped the ball with this one.

That’s exactly what he keeps saying. He might be right.

Hybrid V6? No thanks. I’d look for a clean 2022 with the 5.7 V8 instead. Less complicated, and I’ll take the MPG hit.

I have a 2024 and love it. No issues so far, and they seem to be holding value well. From what I read, the major engine problems were on the Tundras, not the Sequoia. I also got the 125k mile warranty, just in case. Hope you end up getting one.

Your father-in-law might be right. The Gen 1 and 2 Sequoias built their reputation, but the new turbo engines haven’t been as reliable. I wouldn’t trust a Gen 3 in the middle of nowhere. The battery in the back also eats into cargo space.

If you’re set on the Sequoia, do a deep dive into owner reviews. Check YouTube, forums, and see what actual buyers are saying.

@Vinnie
I’m open to all suggestions. He could be right, and I’m no expert, so I’m just gathering info. But Sequoias still seem badass to me.

You might need to just go with a different three-row SUV. Plenty of options out there.

I can afford the Sequoia on my own, I just want to know if it’s still the best choice.

@TomToyotaFan
If you can afford it and really want it, then go for it. I’ve had an ‘02 for eight years, and it’s been great.

The new drivetrain has had some issues, and Toyota is working on fixes. But we won’t really know how reliable it is for another few years.

Ask your father-in-law what SUV he recommends. Every big SUV has its own problems—Tahoe, Expedition, Armada, etc. If reliability is the concern, a lightly used 2021 or 2022 Sequoia would be a better bet. They’re rare and expensive, though.

The engine recall doesn’t affect the Sequoia. Only certain Tundra models with non-hybrid engines had issues.

How do you convince him? Pay for it yourself.

I could, but if I can also get him to help, why not?

Go for a certified pre-owned 2022 Gen 2 instead.
