What common problems do Yaris cars have and when might they be too costly to repair

I have a 2nd generation Yaris from 2005 to 2012

After some years, cars can develop problems where fixing them costs more than what the car is worth. What are some possible issues with the Yaris that could make this happen?

I’m asking because the Yaris appears really strong and easy to fix. Even though they stopped making it a decade ago, you can still find plenty of replacement parts online. (I bought and swapped out 4 suspension assemblies for around $250 USD.) People joke that the car will last longer than its owner. Is this really true? I’m just curious

(I don’t actually plan to drive a Yaris forever. Once I start a family, I’ll look for a different car.)

In the US and Canada, the Yaris was available until 2018, and in other countries, they still sell the Yaris. It’s definitely not discontinued.

For your question, the main issue is rust but other than that, these cars can run for a long time. The engine and automatic transmission are almost indestructible as long as you keep oil in it. ABS sensors can get rusty over time and might trigger an ABS light on the dashboard. Everything else is just regular maintenance.

Only small things tend to go wrong, and they are usually easy to fix. The main problems are rust or if they get crashed.

Especially watch for rust where the rear axle connects to the body.

Came here to mention this

I call my 2008 Yaris 5 speed hatchback a tank. It’s 17 years old and I just changed the water pump last weekend. Note: I’m a bit more than a novice in repairs and this was the biggest job I’ve done on my car. I saved 900 bucks. I don’t have rust issues since I live in SoCal. The only things it really needs are a new paint job and interior replacement, but I haven’t done it because I can’t do it myself.

@Haris
Rust is one thing, plus electronic sensors can fail like lambda and O2 sensors, and the catalytic converter can fail due to age. Regular wear parts like wheel bearings have issues too, but otherwise, they are solid.

I have a mark 3 Yaris.

Keep the rear axle ends and inside steel oiled because they can rust out. I welded mine back together, but it’s a little uneven.
