What Highlander years are most reliable? Any to avoid?

Still driving my 2007 hybrid Highlander hard, and it’s holding up great!

Same here! Mine’s at 190K miles and still going strong.

Any major issues so far?

@EmilyToyotaLover
Nope, just regular maintenance. The only annoying thing is the driver’s side sun visor—it doesn’t stay up anymore.

Avoid the 2020 models. Mine needed a new transmission at just 65,000 miles, so I ended up trading it in.

The transmission issues don’t apply to hybrids—those are only a problem in non-hybrids.

But aren’t hybrid batteries super expensive to replace? How many would I need to replace to get to, say, 200,000 miles?

@Darior
I’ve got an 08 Highlander hybrid at over 200,000 miles, and the original battery is still going strong. Other than routine maintenance, it’s been great.

The only issue I’ve noticed is the engine mounts—nothing major, though.

@Darior
I’ve owned multiple hybrids, including a Prius and a Camry hybrid, and I’ve never had to replace a battery. You’ll probably sell the car before you even come close to needing one replaced.

My 2005 Highlander is still going strong at 230,000 miles on the original everything.

Do the rear seats fold down flat enough for car camping?

Pretty sure they do! It’s a good amount of space, though the newer models are roomier. That’s why I prefer my first-gen—it’s more compact and great as a daily driver.

Yes, they fold flat, and the front seats can fold all the way horizontal too!

Wow, that’s impressive!

I’ve got a 2012 Limited V6 with 90K miles, and it’s rock solid.

The first-gen Highlanders (2001 onward) are tanks. We passed our first one down to family at 244K miles, and now we’re driving an ’03 with 143K. Still going strong!

I’ve got a 2015 XLE with 130K miles. Other than routine maintenance and wiper blades, it’s been perfect.

I plan to keep my 2019 XLE AWD forever. It only has 39K miles, and so far, I’ve just had to replace the tires due to dry rot. Brakes will probably need work soon, though.

I love my 2023 Highlander Hybrid Platinum!

I’d love one too, but it’s way out of my budget!

My 2015 is loaded, and I couldn’t be happier with it.

Hoping to get a 2025 XLE Hybrid in a color that isn’t boring gray. There are so many gray Highlanders out there!
