What Highlander years are most reliable? Any to avoid?

I’ve had my 2009 base model Highlander for 13 years. It’s at 200K miles and still runs like a dream.

One issue with hybrids to watch out for is the AC compressor. It cools both the interior and the hybrid drivetrain. My 2021 has had multiple AC system issues, including corroded lines and a hybrid system malfunction that needed major repairs. Great car when it’s working, but expensive when it breaks.

I like the third-generation models (2015–2019). They’re reliable and have all the tech I need.

My family’s 2008 Highlander has over 220K km and has barely had any problems in the 11 years we’ve owned it.

I’ve got a 2001 V6 with 164,000 miles. Maintenance over the years has been minimal:

  • O2 sensors
  • Timing belt and water pump at 150K
  • Transmission filter at 100K

That’s pretty much it. I’m considering replacing the engine gaskets soon, but overall, it’s been rock solid.
