What’s the real gas mileage on a Prius C

For those driving a Prius C, what kind of gas mileage do you get on a good day

Usually between 41 and 45

Yeah, that sounds about right

It’s wild because my wife and I had two Prius V models, and both consistently got 42 mpg.

If I drive carefully, I can hit the 50s. If I just drive normally, it stays in the low 40s.

Yeah, that’s my usual too. But I’ve hit 50+ many times, once even close to 70 mpg.

I get around 50-55, but I drive really slow

City driving can get you into the 60s. Highway is usually in the 40s. If you drive fast or aggressively, it can drop into the 30s.

It completely depends on how you drive.

I’ve driven my Gen 3 Prius into strong headwinds at 81 mph and got 38-40 mpg. If I’m just driving around town, it’s a lot higher. The best numbers come from the EPA ratings.

Mine got 32 mpg on a road trip from Austin to Rogers, AR. It doesn’t do great with high-speed highway driving.

How fast were you going? I usually get about 46 mpg even at 75 mph.

I heard the Prius gets its best mileage at 70-75 mph. I averaged around 50 mpg at that speed on a long trip in my 2015.

@Noel
I’ve driven Priuses for 13 years, and I can tell you that’s not true.

@Noel
Where did you hear that? The faster you go, the worse your mileage. That’s just basic physics.

@Noel
Not really true, at least for the Gen 2. The best mileage happens around 50 mph, though it’s still decent at 60.

Speed kills fuel economy. The power needed goes up fast as you go faster. At 70 mph, you need 58% more power than at 60 mph and over 2.5 times more than at 50 mph. Wind resistance really starts to matter at higher speeds.

@Vero
Not exactly. The Gen 2 Prius is most efficient at 19 mph.

If you held a pinwheel out the window, ideally it wouldn’t spin at all.

I’d like to see an actual chart showing power usage by speed, but I don’t really care about anything below normal driving speeds.

@Noel
That doesn’t sound right at all. Where did you hear that?

Maybe you meant 70-75 kph (43-46 mph)? That would make more sense.

Yeah, that sounds more like it. My 2014 Aqua (Prius C) can hold 70-75 km/h on a smooth road with about 31 km/L (~73 mpg).
