Hi everyone! I recently bought a 2016 Tacoma V6 and took it to the dealer for the first oil change since I wanted to keep it simple.
Today, I went to the auto parts store for my next oil change and used Mobil 1 0W-20, which I hope works well. I’m curious what others think about engine oils. Do you prefer Toyota brand oil, or do you have another favorite? Thank you for your insights!
Some people really like Toyota oil, while others swear by Mobil 1. I have a friend who uses Castrol GTX, and he has several cars with over 200k miles (none of them are Toyotas). Honestly, timely oil changes matter more than the oil brand itself. High-quality oils perform better over longer intervals, but most people here don’t wait that long for changes. There’s a YouTuber who tested various oils and found that either Walmart or Amazon Basics oil performed really well. I still stick with Mobil 1, though! Just make sure to change your oil regularly.

I agree! The quality of the oil makes a difference only in rare situations (like driving without a water pump). Just pick an oil change special at a parts store, get a good filter, and choose oil that meets OEM requirements. If you shorten the intervals, you’ll avoid any problems. I personally prefer Amsoil because I’ve had great experiences with it in racing.
The key is regular oil changes. I choose Mobil 1 for peace of mind, but there are many reports of folks using Kirkland and generic oils with great success. The V6 isn’t a high-performance engine, so you don’t need anything too fancy.

I’ve only used Mobil 1 for the last 28 years. So far, I have no complaints!

I use Mobil 1 as well. It got my Silverado to 230,000 miles, and it’s still running great.

I use Mobil (synthetic blend) and I’m at 290k miles on my 2002. I think the change interval is key—3k for blends and 5k for full synthetics.

Change your oil at around 4000 miles; that’s more important than the brand. Most oils come from just a couple of major companies.

I use Valvoline High Mileage Ultra Max Life with 5,000-mile change intervals. Walmart even sells it in bulk for better savings.
