I have a 2020 model with the B58B30M1, but I’m thinking about getting a 2025 with the B58B30O1.I know the 2020 has an unlocked ECU and is easier to mod, but the 2025 has more power and torque, plus 2 port vs 6 port.Which one is better overall in terms of reliability, fuel efficiency, and tuning potential?
You won’t really gain much switching to the 2025 unless you want a manual. The 2020 is solid—unlocked ECU, no oil issues, and proven reliability. Just start upgrading it and enjoy.

Which models actually have oil problems? Has there been a clear cause?
@Rye
Some 2021 models had excessive oil use due to piston cylinder wall scoring. It was a factory defect in some engine blocks.

I heard it was because they used the wrong piston rings, but not sure if that’s true.
@Brook
The rings were part of the issue, but the real problem was a new honing process that made the cylinders slightly misshaped. That led to the rings wearing out the cylinder walls, causing the oil consumption problem.
The only thing I don’t love about the 2020 is the oil pump.
The only time the difference between 2 port and 6 port matters is with a big turbo setup (750+ HP). The 6 port flows better, giving maybe 5-10% more HP with 60mm+ turbos. But for stock turbos, the difference is tiny, maybe 5% or less. This info is from old interviews with guys like Mike Botti who pushed the B58 into the 8s.
Not in the Supra, but the new Gen 3 has both direct and port injection. It’s not way more powerful, but tuning potential could make it a beast. Once they crack that ECU, we’ll see what numbers it can hit.
If you want the real upgrade, the S58 is the way to go.
