Which coolant do we all use?

The manual says to use pink Toyota coolant, but all I had was blue. I might sound crazy, but I feel guilty for using this off-brand coolant. I’m not sure if it’s causing any damage.

(Mk2 Yaris SR 1.4 D-4D 2008)

Stick with pink. The seals, hoses, and rubber parts won’t react well to coolant that isn’t made for it. It might not break down right away, or it might fail suddenly—you just don’t know. You should replace it with the right stuff as soon as possible.

Pink or red is what you want. You might get away with all-vehicle coolant, but if you can, get the pink or red.

Edit: I didn’t read your post carefully. If that blue isn’t an all-vehicle blend, you need to remove it ASAP. The wrong coolant can damage important gaskets, including the head gasket, due to the sealant they use.

It says all-vehicle, but I’m not fully convinced it’s best for my car, which is why I’m asking. I hope I haven’t caused any damage. Thanks!

If it’s all-vehicle, you should be fine for a while. If you check your manual, it has specific details about what you can use.

It mentions that the coolant shouldn’t contain sulfate or sulfur. I think that’s what reacts with the seals.

I feel guilty when I do anything non-OEM to my Yaris.

I’m the same way. I’ve really connected with her. It doesn’t help that she’s the most expensive thing I’ve ever owned, and I want to keep her in perfect condition.

@Vick
I bought her for $11k with 70k miles. I even got a custom license plate that says YARIZ.

@Vick
Totally agree.

Just stick to the original pink Toyota coolant. It’s cheap, around $15.

I’ll definitely drain it and use pink from now on. Thanks!

I needed a radiator replacement while out of town, and the shop used Asian Red coolant. Should I just drain it and switch back to pink?

I don’t think red is much different from pink aside from longevity. Don’t quote me, but I think the mk1 used red coolant and mk2+ uses pink.

Personally, I wouldn’t worry about it too much, but since I’m stressing over all-vehicle coolant, take my opinion with a grain of salt!

@Vick
I’ll leave it in for now and change it next year.
