I test-drove a 2020 Yaris automatic this week, and the salesman was showing me the Sport mode. Seems like it would be really useful on a relatively low-power car for getting to highway speed, overtaking, etc.
How common is the Sport Mode button? Only certain years and variants? Is it just on the automatics or also the manuals? (I’d heavily prefer a manual). Any comments on how Sports Mode changes the game?
In North America the 2020 Yaris is a Mazda 2 with Toyota badges.
On most vehicles the “sport” button tends to make the gas pedal more sensitive, and maybe hangs onto gears a bit longer but that’s about it. It doesn’t increase engine power at all.
I have it on my 2020 yaris hybrid. I use if sometimes when entering the highway on a short ramp when I need the power. It shoots forward, quite impressive. It allows the car to use both electric and petrol engines at once far more aggressively instead of trying to be fuel efficient. Edit: the gas pedal also just becomes more responsive and no doubt it also changes a lot of other parameters as well such as steering and what not.
I’m looking for a manual shift for myself, in any case.
I think most would agree that eCVT is the most reliable along with manual, then CVT comes last. CVT transmissions use a sort of metal belt that goes over cones and tends to wear out quickly compared to other forms of transmissions. Toyota is known for making the most reliable CVTs compared to other brands, though I think a manual is still the best choice for reliability and especially cheap repairability.
