Hi everyone I just bought a 2014 Toyota Avalon and I love it so much However I noticed the brakes feel loose It feels like I have to push the pedal down pretty far to stop when I am going over 40mph This is different from what I’m used to in my other cars My maintenance required light came on recently even though the last oil change sticker said I still had about 1.5 to 2k miles until I needed a change So I thought I’d be safe and change the oil and check the brakes at the shop The guy there said my brakes are really good and he wouldn’t change them for at least another year My tires are also pretty new So what’s going on Am I just too used to driving smaller cars and not adjusting to a full-sized sedan Anyone have any thoughts
You might want to consider a brake flush Just to be safe It will remove any air from the system and give you all new fluid I felt a difference after getting it done It cost around $85 at a shop
If you do it yourself it’s about $20 to $30 but I didn’t want to deal with it
@StarlightSpecter
I agree with this Check your brake fluid I had a car where I had to push all the way down on the pedal and it still took a long time to stop It turned out I didn’t have enough fluid If this just started happening suddenly and wasn’t getting worse over time you might have a leak somewhere in the brake lines Get it checked as soon as you can and keep a safe distance on the road Good luck
You probably should check for air in the system Or just go for a brake service and have them bled and inspected
My Avalon’s brakes perform normally as well These cars were made to compete with Cadillacs and other similar ones The soft suspension and brake feel is pretty standard I’d recommend checking the brake fluid and making sure there’s no air in the system for peace of mind
I second the brake fluid flush I did one with a hand pump after changing my rotors and pads on my last car ('09 Avalon that was sadly sideswiped) and it felt way better They were still softer than my first-gen Tundra but that’s how they are designed Smoother brakes mean better brake life and it makes stopping a lot easier
My 2011 has the same feeling The pedal goes down a bit before the brakes kick in I think this is just how this car is

Do you use ceramic pads or OEM pads

I haven’t changed the pads on this car yet but I would probably choose OEM I’m the second owner and the car is nearing 100k miles so the rotors might need replacing soon
