Why Is My 2022 XSE Highlander's MPG So Low?

My 2022 Highlander XSE has much lower mpg compared to others. Only 15mpg in the city and 20-21 on the freeway. We drive carefully. Should we take the car to the dealership to have it checked?

I’m pretty sure most folks just lie about their average MPG. They see 35MPG once on the freeway and think that’s normal.

Fuelly says average MPG is 22-24mpg

There could be engine issues, alignment, tire conditions, etc contributing to lower MPG, so get it checked out, but don’t expect a miracle.

My city has a lot of stop and go traffic with no freeway, and 7 months of winter, so my MPG has always been 20-30% worse than the average.

I get about 20-24 with a city highway blend.

26mpg is the most I got on the highway with my XSE (50-60 miles distance). Very careful driving at more than 60mph. Other than cleaning the air filter, MAF, etc, it could also be your driving habits.

It wouldn’t hurt, especially if it’s still under warranty. Do a search for service bulletins for your model and see if any are related to MPG.

If it’s AWD, switch it to FWD, your mpgs will increase.

Taking it in isn’t a bad idea.

Does the engine sound different than when you bought it?

We bought it used with 8k miles on it. Can’t really tell if it sounds any different from when we bought it, but it’s loud for sure. Maybe it’s just the V6?

I’ll try the FWD thing and see how it goes?

@beky
I’d say a distinct ticking, whistle, or knocking sound would be a big indicator.

Other than that, take it to a shop or dealership and have them check it out.

It’s a full-time AWD system. You can’t turn that off.

How do you ‘turn it to FWD’?

If it’s still under warranty, I would bring it in and see if they find anything.

I will. I have had the TPMS light flashing for a while, so I’m not sure if that’s the problem.

Do you have a V6 or inline 4 cylinder turbo? What kind of tires and how is the maintenance and mileage?

It’s a V6. My tires are Bridgestone and all the maintenance is up to date at Toyota dealerships.

Where do you fill up the gas? Have you checked the engine air filter?

Costco or Shell most of the time. I haven’t. Will definitely check it tomorrow.

My 2019 V6 AWD does about 22 around town and as high as 28 on the highway. I think it’s close to the same engine/transmission you have. Definitely sounds low to me.

What kind of gas do you use and is it eco or normal mode? I tried everything but still same results.

Temperature will impact it. You might also check your tire pressure, but your mileage sounds about right. I have a 2022 XLE AWD and have averaged 19.8 mixed over 14k miles. Around town is 14-19, probably averaging around 17. The best on a road trip was 29, but most of the time it’s 24-26. Cruise control can help a bit. I’ve tracked it on Fuelly since new.
