Why is the finance guy always the final boss… anyone else feel this

Every time I buy a Subaru, everything goes smoothly until I get to the finance guy. They always seem sharp and know their stuff, but the way they push extra insurance is just too much.

It feels like Subaru salespeople are chill compared to other dealerships, but the finance guys? They turn into absolute sales machines.

On my last purchase, I kept saying no to the add-ons, and they just kept throwing out lower prices like it was some kind of game. At one point, they even tried to adjust my interest rate to convince me to take it. No one ever tells you to refuse the first offer because they’ll keep lowering it.

I get that they have a job to do, but why do they act like I’m making the worst mistake of my life by saying no? They love to throw stats at you, making it sound like your windshield is guaranteed to crack the second you drive off the lot.

And then, after you refuse everything, they suddenly go from friendly to passive-aggressive. Ever notice how they seem way less interested in handing you your keys if you didn’t buy their stuff? Just feels weird.

Anyone else feel this?

The finance guy told me I was the first person to ever say no to the extra coverage… sure, buddy…

Mine told me that almost everyone who buys a Subaru gets a cracked windshield on day one. They make it sound like a guarantee. And for a second, I almost believed it.

@Harlyn
If that’s true, then Subaru must be using the weakest glass in the world. And yeah, I’ve seen a ton of people complaining about cracked windshields here.

And they aren’t cheap either—$2000 for a replacement, plus another $150 for calibration.

Wouldn’t regular insurance cover that, though?

@Levi
Insurance guy here—yes, it’s covered, and yes, they’ll pay for the calibration. Just check with your insurance first to see if it’ll raise your rates.

Mine covers one windshield per year. After that, it’s on me.

@Levi
The finance guy made it sound like my insurance wouldn’t cover it or that I’d have to pay more than my deductible. Maybe he was right, or maybe he was just throwing out numbers to scare me into buying. Either way, it felt shady.

@Harlyn
If they keep telling people this, doesn’t that just prove that Subaru windshields are garbage?

Exactly my thought. If it’s really that bad, shouldn’t Subaru be fixing the issue instead of trying to sell us insurance for it?

@Axel
Right? Like, if they’re saying ‘oh yeah, it’ll definitely break’… maybe that’s a reason to buy a different brand?

That’s the thing… it’s not like they’re warning you before you buy the car. They wait until you’re already committed and then try to scare you into buying coverage.

@Axel
It’s like you’re excited to get your new car, and then they sit you down and tell you all the ways it’s about to fall apart. Just let me enjoy my car, man.

@Harlyn
Knocking on wood, but I’ve never had a cracked windshield in any of my Subarus since 1998. Maybe I’m just lucky, or maybe they’re exaggerating.

Yeah, and if it really happens as often as they say, wouldn’t people stop buying Subarus altogether? Sounds like just another sales tactic.

Had a Toyota finance guy tell me to ‘do your research next time’ because I refused their $10K dealer markup. Turns out they didn’t even have the car they were trying to sell me. Ended up buying from another dealer who actually had the car, and they treated me like a VIP just for not being an idiot.

@Kenan
Yeah, I had something similar happen. Toyota dealerships kept calling me saying they had the exact model I wanted, only for me to show up and realize they didn’t. One guy actually bragged about marking up Sequoias by $5000 just because they could. Real classy.

@Harlyn
Car sales is just one of those jobs where they either get you, or they get nothing. So they’ll try anything. Some are just way worse about it than others.

The worst part is that they don’t even seem to enjoy it. Like, if you’re gonna hustle people, at least look like you’re having a good time.

Bought a Ford Focus back in 2012… finance lady tried to sell me undercoating by telling me there was no paint on the bottom of the car, just bare metal. Told her, ‘So you’re saying Ford forgot to paint the bottom of their cars?’ She just blinked at me. Passed on the undercoating, and guess what? No rust.

@Hollis
They rely on people not knowing better. That’s how they make their money.
