Toyota puts the fuel pump in the gas tank to cool it, so even at zero miles left, you still have about 4 gallons in the tank.
So all the newer models have these small tanks?

@Haze
All the new Toyota SUVs have a 17.9-gallon tank with a big reserve. I’ve driven 20 miles past zero and still haven’t put in more than 16 gallons.

That’s to prevent damaging the fuel pump if you run out.

Good to know!

The GX has a 21-gallon tank.
@Haze
My new Tacoma does

Running past zero miles can risk damaging the fuel system.
I’ve got a 5th Gen 4Runner with about the same range (~300 miles), and it’s fine. More gas means more weight and more fuel used. Just compare it with your current tank range.

2nd gen Tundra owner here. I get about 350 miles unless I’m on cruise control the whole time. The only time I want a bigger tank is when I’m towing.
My 4th gen 4Runner gets close to 400 miles per tank depending on how I drive. That’s wild.
If range matters and you’re not hardcore off-roading, consider the Highlander Hybrid. My ‘21 XLE Hybrid shows 500 miles on a full tank and averages 35 mpg.

Thanks, I’ll look into it. I’m just surprised Toyota didn’t give the Land Cruiser a bigger tank.
@Haze
Range concerns are mostly a North American thing. Elsewhere, people don’t drive long distances in big SUVs. Surprised Toyota even brought the Land Cruiser back to the U.S.

Good point. They adjusted the Cruiser for the U.S. but didn’t touch the tank size.

Most first and second Land Cruiser owners don’t do serious off-roading. That’s for the fourth owner 15 years down the line.
The new Cruiser almost doubles the mpg of older models and only loses 6 gallons of tank size, so it’s a big improvement.
Doesn’t sound like you know what you’re buying.
Why not post this on the Land Cruiser forum?

You’d get better answers over there. This place is more about Corollas and RAV4s.
