I’ve got a 2017 RAV4 and recently got a system error message on the dash. Didn’t notice anything different while driving, but the message stayed on. Anyone had something like this before or know what might be going on?
Your AWD system might not be working right. Probably best to get it checked at a dealer.

Any idea what usually causes that?

Could be a ton of stuff, honestly. Most of the time it’s just a weird sensor. Best thing to do is scan it for codes and see what comes up.
@Dezi
You can grab a cheap code reader online and check it yourself.

A $10 Bluetooth scanner and a free app has saved me so much money.

Some parts stores like AutoZone let you borrow one for free too.

Most likely a sensor issue.

Mine did that after hitting a pothole. My husband took it to the dealer but I’m not sure what they fixed.
@Jensen
Another time I didn’t click the gas cap on properly and got a similar warning. It was freezing and I wasn’t paying attention.

Same thing happened with my 07 Camry. I didn’t know a loose gas cap would trigger the check engine light, but it says it right on the cap.
@Jensen
That actually helps more than you think
The AWD might be fine. Sometimes the check engine light makes it turn off just to be safe. Fix whatever set the check engine light first.

Yeah that makes sense.
My wife had the same kind of message after AAA jumped the battery. Ended up just being a couple blown fuses.

That usually happens when they jump it backward by mistake. It kills acceleration and blows the ECTS fuse. Cheaper than a bus fuse but still avoidable. People should really learn how to jump a car properly.
Could be a speed sensor or maybe something up with your front or rear diff.
If your check engine light is on, the AWD gets turned off as a safety thing. Loose gas cap is the most common cause. Still, best to have a good shop check it.
Real convenient that it comes with a price tag… $430.88 right on the screen.
Same thing happened with mine. Took it to the dealer under warranty and they charged me anyway. Turned out to be the gas cap.
