Did I mess up using the wrong gas for my Camry since last July?

I got my 2024 Camry TRD last July and have been filling up at my Costco near home. The pump says 87, and I always thought that meant it had no ethanol between 20-85, but I just noticed it says ‘up to E15 gasoline only.’ Have I been using the wrong fuel this whole time? The car has been running fine, but now I’m wondering. Also, ignore the water drops and dirt in the pic—I was trying to wash the car, but with the cold weather, I barely had time before the sun went down.

Regular pump gas has up to 15% ethanol, and you’re fine. The issue is when you try to use E85 in a car not built for it. Your Camry can handle what you’ve been putting in it.

The Costco pump just says ‘87’ with ‘Regular Unleaded’ under it. It doesn’t mention ethanol at all. So does 87 mean octane, ethanol, or both?

@Alexander
Costco gas can have up to 10% ethanol. You’re using 87 octane with up to 10% ethanol, which is fine for your car. My 2007 V6 Camry and RAM 1500 take the same fuel.

That sums it up better than I did.

First year for the 2GR V6 in the Camry, nice.

It might be because he called himself that word. People see a downvoted comment and pile on.

The gas pump, the cap, the owner’s manual, and Google all have this info, but now this forum has to explain it?

@Shinji
Google has way too many answers to the same question. It just gets confusing.

It’s literally written on the pump. If you don’t know a word, look it up.

You’re here replying anyway. Might as well just answer instead of scolding.

@Del
Appreciate that. Some people just like talking down to others.

@Alexander
87 is the octane rating unless it says E85, which is different.

  • 87 octane = 87 rating (can have up to 15% ethanol)
  • 89 octane = 89 rating (can have up to 15% ethanol)
  • E85 = 85% ethanol (requires a special tune and fuel system to run properly).

You can’t use E85 in most cars because the fuel mix is different. Gas requires a 14.7:1 air-fuel ratio, while E85 needs 9.8:1.

Not an expert, just someone who likes cars and speed.

No. The number on the pump 87/89/91/93 (depending on where you are) reference octane. Most gas unless otherwise noted in the US contains about 10% ethanol by volume.

Some gas stations also have E15 (listed as unleaded 15 here) and E85 (also known as flex fuel )these have 15% or 85% ethanol by volume. This indicates that the Camry can only take up to E15.

Thanks to everyone who helped. I appreciate those who explained things instead of just downvoting.

To keep it simple:

  1. The 87, 89, and 91 you see at pumps refer to octane, and they all work fine in your car.
  2. Most gas contains up to 10% ethanol, sometimes labeled on the pump. Anything over 15% ethanol isn’t meant for regular cars like yours.
  3. Avoid flex fuel pumps with E85—that’s too much ethanol for your Camry.

87 octane is fine. Just don’t use the pump labeled FLEX.
