Insurance shot up after getting a newer car… anyone else

I went from a 2011 Outback to a 2017 Outback and my insurance bill pretty much doubled—from $135 to $268 a month. Is this normal or am I getting played? It’s now more than what I pay for the car itself.

That’s just how insurance works over time… they sneak up the price. Try switching companies, it worked for me.

Unless you live in California, it’s not that easy.

Florida and Texas are worse than Cali for this stuff.

@Robe
California has rules on how much they can raise rates, so some companies just left. Now it’s a pain to get insurance at all. They make you jump through hoops.

Florida’s had way more companies bail though. Texas is pricey too. I used to write policies in California until I had to stop working. It wasn’t that bad then, not like people are saying now.

I’ve been working in insurance for 6 years. Lots of us are leaving both states. It’s not just hype.

Who’s ‘us’? If you’re an independent agent, you’re not the one writing the policies anyway. Most major companies haven’t actually left the auto market.

@Robe
Weird, I’m in Texas and pay $144/month for two cars, one being a pricey SUV. Maybe I’m just lucky.

There’s always people who get better rates. Most of the people I helped from Texas were paying a lot more. Just depends.

Prices go up for everything, insurance too. People act shocked like it’s the only thing that won’t cost more. Shop around, but expect some increase.

@Robe
True, but going from $135 to $268 for a used car feels off. I switched from a 2014 Kia to a 2016 Outback and my rate didn’t really change.

I was with State Farm for over 15 years and out of nowhere they doubled my rate. No reason, no changes. Switched to Progressive, then they started creeping up too. Now I’m with USAA, hoping they stay chill for a while. It’s just a never-ending cycle.

@EDAH
Really sucks how they all play this game. I’ve got USAA now too but haven’t checked if they’re still giving me a good deal. Gotta compare soon.

Yeah, Progressive had me overpaying without me realizing. Switched to USAA and got better coverage for about the same price. But yeah, won’t last forever I’m sure.

@EDAH
I’m with USAA and they just hit me with a big rate hike. Went from $166 to $255. Haven’t even shopped around yet cause I got my homeowners with them too.

Damn, that’s rough. Seems like none of them want loyal customers anymore.

You have a 3009 Outback? That car must fly lol.

@Orin
Yeah, it’s the Millennium Falcon’s cousin :smile:

@EDAH
Same thing happened to me. Now Progressive jacked my home insurance 40%. Time to shop around again.
