Subaru sending data to insurance… anyone know more

Saw a New York Times article (paywalled) saying Subaru is one of the car brands sharing driving data with insurance companies. It looks like Subaru is just sharing odometer readings, while GM is giving out way more. Does anyone have details on what exactly Subaru is sending? Trying to figure out how much info they actually have on us.

In the MySubaru app, there’s a section under Legal Disclaimers with a ‘Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Info’ form. Anyone know if that actually stops them from sharing?

Just filled it out… hoping it works.

I did it and got this email:

Thank you for contacting Subaru about your privacy rights under various state laws. We’ll process the following requests:

Right to Know:
Once verified, we’ll send details on what personal info we collect, share, and sell.

Right to Opt Out:
We will stop selling or sharing your data with third parties. If you change your mind, call 1-800-SUBARU3.

Right to Be Forgotten:
We will delete personal info unless it’s exempt under the law. We’ll also notify any third parties we shared data with.

It can take up to 45 days, and they might ask for more details. If you want to change your request, call 1-800-SUBARU3.

@Milo
I did it too, but I’m a little worried about the ‘Right to Be Forgotten’ part. Does this mess with my MySubaru account or Starlink features?

Should be fine, haven’t noticed anything different.

@Milo
Anyone confirm? I want to do this but don’t want to lose Starlink access.

Yeah, I still have Starlink. I guess they stopped tracking me, but how would I even know for sure?

@Milo
You can request your data from LexisNexis… they’re the ones selling it to insurance.

Guess we’ll find out.

That’s not how it works.

Tried finding the ‘Do Not Sell or Share’ form but can’t see it in the app. Anyone know exactly where to look?

@Zed
It should be in the Legal Disclaimers section. If you’re in Canada, it might not be there.

Same here in Colorado, no option.

Yeah, I think it’s not available in Canada.

Repair shops where I live send data to Carfax. No idea if insurance companies get it too, but wouldn’t be surprised. Feels like everyone is selling our info.

There’s a Congressional investigation into this, and a class-action lawsuit against GM.
