I just bought my 4th Gen Tacoma about two weeks ago. After driving for only 650 miles, my transmission broke down. Yesterday, leaving work, it felt like the transmission was in neutral. I put it in park and back to drive, and was able to crawl to about 20mph with a loud whining sound. I turned the engine off and on, and was able to drive again, but now 1st and 3rd gears aren’t working at all. The truck only drives at high RPMs at 5mph. I managed to get it to a dealer at highway speed, and now I have a loaner while they replace the transmission and torque converter. No idea when it’ll be ready, so I’m just waiting. I’m not angry, just disappointed. I knew something could go wrong. Anyone else had this happen and gotten any compensation from Toyota? Not sure if I’m in lemon law territory yet, but any advice is welcome!
Two weeks ago? Is your VIN part of the TSB? If not, this might be the first case outside of it. I thought all these would be gone by now unless the truck sat on the lot for a while. Here’s a link to check it out: https://twstatic.net/attachments/img_0797-jpg.5862968/
@DavidDaniel1
From what I know, it’s not part of the TSB. The first part of the VIN matches, but the last numbers don’t. Not totally sure.

You only need to match the first part, and then if the serial number (last 6 digits) is lower than the one on the TSB, it’s included.
@DavidDaniel1
It’s crazy that they’re still selling trucks with the transmission issues covered by the TSB.
@DavidDaniel1
After checking your VIN, did it match the TSB?

That’s tough. I really like how the 4th Gen looks, both inside and out. But it’s disappointing to hear about all the transmission issues.
I think there’s been a class action lawsuit against Toyota for these transmission problems. I thought they fixed the issue after it first came up in June/July?
I feel your pain. I’ve got a 2023 Chevy Silverado High Country. Had it for 10 months and 26,500 km, and here’s what’s broken: OnStar module, battery, transmission valve body, transfer case, AC charge pump, passenger leaf spring pack, and I’m probably forgetting something. It’s rough making payments on a truck that’s just sitting at the shop. As soon as I got mine back, I switched to a 4th Gen manual. Never drove a manual before, but I drove it home from another city.
@Penn
Honestly, you might qualify for a lemon law claim. I had a 2019 Colorado with transmission issues, filed a lemon law claim, and got a Taco.

I think they’re in Canada, where lemon laws don’t apply.
I’d be really upset if that happened to me.
Had something similar happen to me at 1900 miles. You can check out my earlier post for details. Took about a month to fix. It helped to contact Toyota corporate. They made sure the transmission was ordered and installed smoothly. Just today, I got an email asking if they can buy my truck back. I’ll keep you updated when I get more info.
Keep us posted. I just got mine last week and am at 545 miles so far, and everything’s good.

Will do! At least the dealer has been really helpful, so that’s a relief.
That’s brutal, having a brand new vehicle torn apart… Hopefully, they put it back together with care.
Good luck, OP! Hope everything gets sorted out. I’d be really upset if my new truck had issues like that.
I’d be furious. I’d tell them to take it back and get me a 3rd Gen replacement.
