Tundra engine replacement… anyone else dealing with this?

Finally making progress on my Tundra’s engine replacement. It seized up on the highway, and it’s been a frustrating process, but at least they’re working on it now. Curious if anyone else has had to deal with this yet?

What a sad chapter for Toyota. They’re better than this.

This has me thinking twice about trading in my 2013 Tundra.

I’ve got a 2013 too. No way I’m buying a new one until they figure this out. My dad got lucky and found a new ‘21 right before the third-gen came out. I don’t trust turbos unless it’s a diesel.

So is the ‘22 considered third-gen? If so, your dad really lucked out!

Yeah, but I meant to say he bought a ‘21. Fixed my comment.

Why worry? If something happens, you get a brand-new engine. Seems like a decent trade-off to me, speaking as someone who just went through it.

I’d wait until 2026 or 2027 before buying a new one. Hopefully, they’ll have all the bugs worked out by then.

I’d give it another year or two. Maybe by 2026 they’ll have everything sorted.

You can keep hoping.

Meanwhile, me and my 2012 are doing just fine over here.

That hood on top of the cab is driving me nuts. Those things bend if you even look at them the wrong way.

Your truck will pull through!

Isn’t this supposed to be a cab-off repair?

Toyota changed their process. They designed a special hoist so they can replace the engine without removing the cab.

I’ve seen posts showing it done both ways at different dealerships. Been keeping an eye on it.

My truck has the load-leveling rear height control air suspension. Maybe that’s why they’re going cab-off for mine?

A buddy who works as a Toyota service manager told me it’s actually three hours faster to remove the cab, but Toyota doesn’t want them doing it that way.

Taking the cab off requires a heavy-duty forklift or a crane. If the shop doesn’t have that, they need to take apart the whole front end instead. Same deal with Ford Super Duties.

I’d lose my mind if I had to deal with this. The truck will never be the same after it’s torn apart like that. You just know there are going to be leftover bolts and screws rattling around.
