What happened to the middle speedometer

I used to have a 2012 Toyota Yaris hatchback with the speedometer right in front of the steering wheel like most cars. I just got a 2009 Toyota Yaris hatchback in December and saw that the speedometer is now in the center of the dashboard. Why did Toyota change the speedometer design in newer Yaris models? I really liked it being in the middle.

This design goes back to the 90s. The Echo had it too. I’m not sure why they changed it to a more typical setup. I like cars with personality. My 2014 is fine, but I miss my 2010. It had three glove boxes!

I think it was better for your eyes to refocus since it was farther away. Plus, the steering wheel doesn’t block it. I like my setup.

It’s closer to the windshield which I really prefer over looking down in front of the steering wheel.

I prefer the speedometer in the center because I can lean back as far as I want in the driver seat without missing it. I can’t find a real reason why they switched back to the standard style in front of the steering wheel. This Yaris is so underrated.

Yeah good luck finding an explanation. I have no idea.

The three glove boxes are a nice bonus.

Three glove boxes? Where are they?

@Wei
One on the front driver’s side, and two on the front passenger side.

That’s amazing!

I have a 2010 but haven’t driven it in three years, so I forgot about those cool compartments. Great car! I see you have nice wood trim too. What trim level do you have?

That’s from my friend’s Yaris. Mine is in the shop for some brake pads tomorrow.

I’m not sure about the trim.

I think they moved it to avoid backseat passengers arguing about the speed. You know, someone saying you’re going too fast.

@FrankRich2
Right, that makes sense.

@DavidDaniel1
It’s probably because most people didn’t like the previous design, so it was changed back.

Was it ever about safety that led to this change?

I doubt it. The main safety features for the driver are built into the steering wheel, seat, and various parts around the dashboard.

I don’t like it, but I got the car for only 500 bucks.
