I think it’s more about forced driving habits. Lots of people would prefer smaller trucks like those in Japan. Most truck owners aren’t hauling heavy loads anyway. Big companies don’t want you realizing that smaller trucks are a good option, especially with better fuel economy.
A big part is that larger trucks get taxed less, so they build them bigger to dodge taxes.

I’m seeing more small European trucks around lately, all with steering on the wrong side.

I had an old Toyota pickup in the 90s… great for camping and kayaking. I sold it to a scrapyard, but it kept showing up around town.
