Can someone explain why the Toyota Land Cruiser is considered so good? I always hear about its reliability. It seems like the diesel and petrol engines can run for hundreds of thousands of miles, and I’ve heard they don’t rust much either. Any long-term owners or someone with knowledge care to explain?
The Land Cruiser was built in Japan, by people who took pride in their work. Toyota also pioneered quality control on the assembly line. They built the Cruiser with simplicity and proven components, which is why they’re so reliable.

Is it really that good? I drive one for work, and it doesn’t seem that special. I actually prefer the Hilux.

I like the HDJ100 more than any Hilux I’ve driven, but it’s all personal preference.

Definitely personal preference. I just don’t see the Land Cruiser being worth its high price, especially compared to the Hilux.

Are you talking about the Hilux pickup or the SUV version?

The pickup, but yeah, it’s kind of apples to oranges.

Got it. I own a Fortuner and am looking forward to the Hilux being available in my country.

Not a Land Cruiser, but I had a 2011 Sequoia with the 5.7 V8 that made it to 200k miles before it was totaled. Everything still worked, and I would’ve kept it to 300k miles. Had some minor issues, but overall, it was solid.

I had a '96 LX450, which is basically the same as the FJ80. Not a lot of room inside, but everything worked. It needed regular maintenance, but if you keep up with it, these things last forever.

Land Cruisers are handmade in Japan to very high standards. They even do ultrasounds on the engine blocks to check for imperfections. If they find any, they melt them down and start over. That’s why a 20-year-old Land Cruiser can still go for $10k or more.

They’re amazing, but don’t expect great gas mileage.

I pulled my 80 series out of a field after it sat for two years. It has 260k miles on it, and it still runs like a champ. I’ve pulled out countless Jeeps and Fords with it. Truly the king of off-road.

They’re just built tough. My ‘99 100 series has 287k miles, and I still take it on road trips and off-road adventures.

That’s awesome, thanks!
No problem! Check out 24/7 4WD on YouTube for more reasons why they’re so great.

I’ve got a 1976 Land Cruiser as my daily driver. It’s reliable, and if something goes wrong, it’s easy to fix. Sure, it’s loud and uncomfortable, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Do you know how rust works?
Mine’s 23 years old and doesn’t have a spot of rust.

If you live in a dry state like Arizona or Texas, that’s why.
