Why is Toyota Fortuner and Hilux isnt in the US Market?

Chicken tax

Short answer: high tariffs make it too expensive to import any light truck that’s not made in North America. The Fortuner is based on the Hilux platform, and they’re usually kept separate, but both are not sold here for the same reason.

But the 4Runner and new Land Cruiser are made in Japan and exported to the US. The 4Runner isn’t even sold in Japan.

Yeah, they’re considered wagons legally. That’s the difference. The Fortuner is tied to the Hilux platform, which makes it fall under light truck rules.

Why don’t they just build them here then?

Same reason you’re not starting a car factory tomorrow… it’s not practical with the current market.

Hilux is better than Tacoma any day. Not sure about the Fortuner though.

Why do you think that? What’s the difference?

Hilux is built tougher for off-road and rough conditions. It’s made for markets where the roads are bad and off-roading is part of daily life. Tacoma is more built for recreation. Plus, the Hilux has indestructible diesel engines.

Wish Toyota would bring their diesels here. Thinking of swapping one into my Jeep.

Toyota can’t get them to pass emissions here without detuning them too much. Nobody would want it.

Fair point, but still a bummer.

With all the issues Cummins had with emissions, it’s no wonder other companies are hesitant.

Time to fight for more reasonable emissions laws. Europe seems to have it easier.

Crazy that this isn’t being talked about more. It just restricts free market access.

Hilux is known for being a rugged truck, great off-road, but not the most comfortable ride. The Tacoma is more set up for highway driving, which is how they’re mostly used here.

It’s all about the chicken tax. Has nothing to do with feel or utility. Just an outdated law holding it back.

The newer Hilux isn’t all that different. Older models maybe, but since 2004, it’s basically the same truck. US buyers just prefer bigger trucks that feel more like SUVs.

It’s funny calling a Hilux small. I rented a 2021 double cab once, and it looked like a tank next to my dad’s full-size sedan. Just shows how huge trucks are in the US.

I showed my Aussie friend my Colorado ZR2, and he thought it was massive. Then I showed him an F350, and he realized the ZR2 wasn’t that big after all.

ZR2 is still a solid truck. Tell your wife it’s fine, and your friend is compensating lol.

Haha, my friend with the F350 actually uses it. He’s got a fifth-wheel camper. But yeah, I’m happy with my mid-size truck… wouldn’t want to deal with those fuel costs.

Hilux comes in different sizes. The base models look more like a regular truck compared to the US behemoths.

True, especially the single cab versions… they look a lot smaller.

Hilux isn’t in the US because of the Chicken Tax. It’s not made here, so there’s a 25% import tariff. Fortuner’s on the same platform, so same deal.

I’ll never understand the obsession with giant pickups.

So is the Hilux like Toyota’s version of a Jeep but with a bed?
