Hilux is known for being a rugged truck, great off-road, but not the most comfortable ride. The Tacoma is more set up for highway driving, which is how they’re mostly used here.

So is the Hilux like Toyota’s version of a Jeep but with a bed?

There are Jeeps with beds too.

How firm is the mattress though?

Land Cruisers are Toyota’s Jeeps. Hilux is more of a work ute, similar to a Ford Ranger.

Fun fact: The original Jeep was so good in the military that US troops in post-war Japan got Toyota to make their own version, which kicked off Toyota’s off-road line.

Not exactly, Toyota’s first Jeep clone was the AK10 in 1942 based on a captured prototype.

FJ Cruiser is basically a foreign Jeep.

Yeah, that’s what they call the Tacoma over there.

Tacoma and Ranger are about the same size.

Tacoma’s mainly for the US. Globally, Ranger and Hilux are more direct competitors.

Not really… it’s more of a work ute.

The 4Runner is probably closer to being Toyota’s Wrangler.

Plus, Fortuner and Hilux often have the steering wheel on the ‘wrong’ side for the US.

Hilux in Mexico is left-hand drive though.

Hilux is better than Tacoma any day. Not sure about the Fortuner though.

Why do you think that? What’s the difference?

Hilux is built tougher for off-road and rough conditions. It’s made for markets where the roads are bad and off-roading is part of daily life. Tacoma is more built for recreation. Plus, the Hilux has indestructible diesel engines.
